July Spotlight Feature
Touring around the world, pursuing a passion that she loves, who would have known that Martina Sykes would be the spotlight for our July feature. We are truly excited to see and learn how she's maintained her passion in the Arts, and also see how she's left her footprint of change on this world while seeing her dreams and goals unfold in front of her eyes. Let's see what she has to say about living a purpose filled life.
Style-Ography: Tell us a little about your purpose in life, and what you do?
Martina: I am a Broadway performer (Wahoo, feels good to say that) lol, and I'm the founder of the heART Mission, an organization that helps to provide needs for the homeless in various communities. My purpose is more than what I do, it’s a part of who I am. I am convinced that nothing I've experienced whether bad or good is solely for me. It is for me to show someone who is currently going through the same scenarios, how to get through it and succeed better than I did. What good is success if you can’t help someone else be victorious. I am a vessel being used by GOD and this is my purpose!
Style-Ography: Briefly describe your journey to getting connected to your life’s purpose.
Martina: Tough times in my life has broadened my perspective and helped me to realize my purpose. I had to focus on myself, write positive affirmations, and actively practice my faith. While focusing on myself I began to hear or find the answers I was seeking. From this my mind and heart started to change. I thought your purpose was directly connected to your career, which isn’t true. It’s what you do not who you are. Your purpose is a lot about others and less about yourself.
Yes, you can sing and that’s awesome but how does that effect change in your life and those around you? If you couldn’t sing anymore what would you do? What would you want your legacy to be? These were the questions that floated through my mind. The more I heard from God and actively practiced my faith, I realized that God was connecting me to my life's purpose. The clearer the picture appeared, the more I realized that purpose represented verbs such as Inspire, motivate, and effect. From that day forward I knew there was more for me to accomplish.
Style-Ography: What advice would you give today to a group of young teen girls?
Martina: My dad always tells me (still, like today still). Get better at something every day. Make your weaknesses your strengths. Strengthen what you’re already good at. Continue to learn and always be teachable. Be your greatest self.
For me, I would share to realize that NO ONE in ANY POSITION can stop you from fulfilling your destiny. Only you can do that. It doesn’t matter who is or who’s not cheering you on. Be your own biggest fan! Encourage yourself every day because you will never let yourself down.
Style-Ography: Is there anything important that you would like to share with us and for us to share with our audience?
Martina: Women are one of the most powerful things ever created and when you are aware of your value you are unstoppable and you should always invest in yourself!
